Frequently Asked Questions

What does acupuncture feel like?

The sterile, single-use needles used during acupuncture are different from any other type of medical instrument. They are fine and flexible and are usually not felt initially, upon insertion. Once your energy is successfully conducted towards the needle, patients then report experiencing a sense of heaviness, numbness, or electric stimulation at the needle site, or along the accompanying portion of the acupuncture channel being stimulated. Because these sensations are new, they can cause mild discomfort at first; most patients find treatments to be very relaxing.

How does it work?

The stimulation of acupuncture points tap into the micro-current of electricity, or energy, that circulates throughout the entire body. The result of this includes (but is not limited to) a stimulation of:
- neuro-chemical and hormonal changes
- muscular, vascular and skin changes by increasing of blood and lymph circulation
- decrease in inflammation & relief from pain
- relief of muscle spasms, soreness or ache
- increase in T-cell count to stimulate the immune system, awakening the body to heal itself.

Does Awaken take insurance?

Awaken Integrative Health Centers accepts insurance for acupuncture patients. In order to best serve you we can verify your insurance benefits before you arrive. Please click on the link Verify your insurance and complete the online form. You will be contacted as soon as your benefits are established.

How is acupuncture and alternative medicine different from conventional medicine?

Acupuncture Physicians and other Alternative and Complimentary Health Care Providers treat patients from the perspective of Holistic medicine, which takes the entire person into account, rather than a list of symptoms our patients experience. At Awaken our Primary Health Care Providers treat from the perspective that all symptoms are an outward expression of an imbalanced state that involves the physical body, mental state, and emotional state of each patient. Contrary to treating each of your symptoms as though they are separate from each other, a holistic approach is where we come from every time we design a customized care plan for your individual needs.

How should I prepare for treatment?

- Fill out your confidential intake form after you have scheduled your appointment, prior to arriving
- Verify your insurance using the "verify my insurance" link before your appointment
- You should not eat a large meal, nor should you be fasting before your appointment. You should also not have alcohol, tobacco, or do any vigorous exercise prior to a treatment. It's best to wear comfortable, loose clothing. Please avoid the use of perfumes, colognes, or strongly scented cosmetics out of courtesy for other patients.

How will I feel after treatment?

Relaxed and calm

How many treatments do I need?

The length, number, and frequency of treatments vary from person to person depending on the condition being treated, age, overall health condition, and one’s response to acupuncture. Generally, we schedule a follow-up session within a week of your first treatment to determine how well the acupuncture is working for you. We will schedule you as far out as possible, without symptoms of the condition resurfacing. Our goal is to have you be well in the shortest amount of time possible. Ultimately, your body will tell us how often you need treatment.
